By Erasmo Yarrito, Jr. Team Leader Watermaster Program

Rio Grande River and Reservoir System's condition and how the Watermaster is involved.

Erasmo Yarrito, Jr. Watermaster Team Leader will make the presentation. Water flow, plants blocking the river, water taken without allocation, and many other matters that include our neighbor, Mexico. What is the drought situation and how much of the water belongs to the USA and how much to Mexico? What controls are in place to control water distribution?

SEA TURTLE NESTING NEWS
The 2008 season for the highly endangered Kemps' Ridley sea turtles, which nest right here on our beaches, is one for the record books: 51 nests have been found so far - 40 on  S. Padre Island, and 11 on Boca Chica Beach. In addition, one Atlantic Green nest was found, only the second one ever to be documented on the South Texas coast!  Hatchlings are being released at a record pace, with close to 2,000 so far having made their way back into the Gulf. Releases are open to the public and occur at 7am at County Beach Access #4.  Visit www.seaturtleinc.com for estimated hatch dates, and/or call 761-4511 for more information if you'd like to be part of one of these wondrous experiences.
Cool Cities

Ann Drumm of the Sierra Club from Dallas lead twenty-three of us in building teams and discussion on how to help cities and counties to be CoolCities and save money at the same time. A tried, successful plan was studied to help our public officials to develop ways to being GREEN and saving tax payers money. Some cities are already doing some of the things that do just this.

A team was formed for Brownsville, and another for the Laguna Vista / Port Isabel / SPI area. Free three-ring binders full of information for the public officials were given to the teams.  If you are interested in being part of a team, please come to the SPI area organizational meeting Wednesday, July 9th, 6:30pm, at the South Padre Island Golf Course Clubhouse and/or get in touch with Lee Zieger for team information..

History of Birding & Conservation in Brownsville
A deal is worked out for us to have two pages in a new book with 10,000 copies to include birding and conservation. My idea was to recant the events with historical pictures and text in arriving at today. Today would include the active participants of birding and conservation including Rio Grande Delta Audubon and the locations birders and conservationist seek in Brownsville. I need some help in doing some research and writing. We have about two months.
