Come see adult Whooping Cranes with their young. See them foraging, wading, and flying; their size is awesome. The color of these cranes and their young is striking. Kevin Sims the Captain of the boat "The Jack Flash" took a group of four photographer birders. The boat brought us so close to the crane only the head could be photographed. You will see the cranes foraging for crabs in grass and then clams in the shallow water.
Several rookeries produced wading birds. We watched and photographed birds bringing in twigs and grass getting ready for nesting. The captain again piloted the boat very close to the shore and the birds stayed as if this boat was a part of their environment for some great pictures. Reddish Egret (white morphs too), Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, American Avocets, White Pelicans, Brown Pelicans, American Oystercatchers, Great Blue Herons, Turkey Vultures, and Roseate Spoonbills made up a cross section of wild like we have much of here the Lower Laguna Madre wildlife.
Perhaps a field trip next Spring would be of interest for some of you -- as a Birder and/or Photographer. The Boat will carry up to 12. Other larger party boats are also available. On this trip we arrived for an afternoon boat trip and stayed overnite for a Day Break trip the next morning returning to Brownsville that afternoon.
An excellent evening out with dinner was enjoyed by all. Suggestions for next year -- stay away from Spring Break timing. The birds don't mind, but lodging is hard to find.
