Event:
The Rio Grande
Delta Audubon Chapter will hold their monthly meeting
on Monday, October 1, 2007, 6:30 p.m. at the Historic Brownsville
Museum at 7th and Madison Streets in Brownsville, Texas.
A locator
map is on this web site.
Our speaker
below will cover conservation efforts for Sea Turtles.
Judy
Walton - Gulf of Mexico Sea Turtles
|
Judy's "turtle
talk" will cover information about the 5 species
that live in the Gulf; a little about the history of
Sea
Turtle, Inc, including
its founder, Ila Loetscher; the nesting season just concluded
and a short photo tour of
the tanks and some of our resident turtles. She may have
a short video of this weeks Loggrhead release and/or
some video of the historic Green strandings this winter.
From
Judy - As for me, I taught at UTB/TSC for 31 years before
retiring in 2001. I am now Emmerita Professor of Kinesiology.
I've
been on the Board of the Friends of Laguna Atascosa since
1999, and after I retired one of the biologists at the
refuge asked if I wanted to do turtle nesting patrols.
So, I started those in 2003 and then went to a hatchling
release and was hooked---I started volunteering at Sea
Turtle, Inc right after that. I'm into my fourth year there
as a volunteer. I never thought I could be so enamored
of sea turtles, but I am!
Come
and get hooked too.

Rain out
Day October 27, 2007
|
| Rio
Grande Delta Audubon is asked to do the Hot Dog cooking
and fixing for 3,000 plus hot dogs. We need
at least one person to keep up to five boiling pots cooking
the weiners
and at
least
six bun stuffers to fill out the team. I will be getting
an exact starting time, but it will be early about 6AM
and last until about noon. Once the job is done you can
help with other activities or leave. Let Lee Zieger
know if you can come. Click for flyer with details and
map. |
Groove-billed
Ani season
|
| The summer heat brings the Groove-billed Ani
to their northern most range the Rio Grande Valley. The above
photo was taken at the Bird Tree on Texas 4 (Boca Chica)
across from the Massey Lane entry and a big yellow smiley
face. This dead tree had Northern Mockingbird and Long-billed
Thrasher that same
morning
and Osprey many times. |
